The horse has always had great importance in the collective imagination. His key role in the life of man, in peace as in war, has opened the doors of myth to him: just think of Bucephalus, Alexander the Great’s steed which has now become legendary, or the many equestrian figures present in classical mythology. After a multidisciplinary introduction – between literature, philosophy and natural sciences – the essay focuses on the importance of cavalry in the war scenario, reviewing the military strategies of the Athenians and Spartans, Romans and barbarians. The book ends with a reflection about horse riding in the modern era.
