More than 31 million hectares of land are protected and managed in 16 refuges by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska, representing nearly 81 percent of the entire U.S. refuge system; more than 24 percent of the entire U.S. refuge system; more than 24 percent of this land base is designated Wilderness.
