Although Jinny’s early childhood attempts to dig through the earth to China were unsuccessful, about thirty years later, in 1980, she got her first chance to travel there. The tourist highlights of that initial excursion included a section of China’s signature landmark, the Great Wall. Since then, Jinny has deepened her knowledge of Chinese culture and language, and has traveled to China eight more times. During nearly three years of living in and journeying through some of China’s less-frequented rural areas, she’s seen both western and eastern terminuses of China’s 5,500 mile wall. Jinny Batterson has spent nearly three years of intermittent travel and teaching in various parts of the People’s Republic of China. She’s also traveled extensively in the U.S., and has spent time in over thirty countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. She continues to travel and to work at improving her word craft. When not on a plane, train, or bus somewhere exotic, she shares a small condo in central North Carolina with her husband Jim, numerous houseplants, and a low-maintenance “pet”-a ceramic cat.
