Description
A Poetry of Birds is a collection of 38 free-verse poems about various wild bird species. The poems are accompanied by full-color prints of the photographs that inspired them, taken by a professional wildlife and nature photographer. The poetry expresses the author’s emotional, spiritual, and intellectual responses to the birds as they appear in the photos and to the bird species. The poems vary in tone from whimsical and comical to serious and tragic. The combination of poems and visual images makes for a stronger impression on the reader than would either medium alone. Dan Liberthson, PhD, born in Rochester, NY, now lives in San Francisco. He believes that telling a story and attention to the sound of the language are important for successful poems. His prior poetic books include Morning and Begin Again (2012), about ambiguity and ambivalence in life; Animal Songs (2010), which explores the powerful presence of animals in our lives; The Pitch is On the Way (2008), which considers what baseball means to its fans; and A Family Album (2006), about Dan’s childhood in an American Jewish family with a schizophrenic sister. The latter three books are illustrated with photographs or drawings. The Golden Spider (2015) is a fantasy novel for children aged 9-14. All of these publications are available via Dan’s website, liberthson.com.
